Shimba Hills
The reserve has a size of 320 km2 and is located in the hinterland of the south coast, only a few kilometers from Diani Beach. From Mombasa, the distance is about 33km to the reserve. The hills rise up to around 500m above sea level and at the individual hills are covered mostly with grass and bushes. Ernest Hemingway described the Shimba Hills as “The Green Hills of Africa”. The highest of these is the Pengo Hill, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surroundings. Then there are the Sheldrick waterfalls. In addition, the Reserve has a beautiful coastal rain forest, which is home to rare orchids and butterflies.
Founded in the protected area 1968 to protect the sable antelope. In the reserve but also live buffalo, Elephant, Giraffe, Lion, Leopards, Meerkatzen, black and white colobus monkeys, Zebras, Buschböcke, various species of gazelle and galagos.
The visitor can find the game viewing and camping or to the area on foot, to explore the paths created. The network of trails in the reserve is very well developed and comprises about 150 km. Especially for beach lovers, it is to attend a welcome change that park without long travel times.
