Sun
The Kenyan sun is considerably stronger than in other moderate latitudes, even if the sky is overcast! Always use sunscreen with high SPF protection, especially when visiting the beach or participating in watersport activities.
Even a few minutes in the plain sun , particularly around noon, can cause considerable sunburn and dehydration of the body!
To avoid dehydration it is important to drink a minimum of 4 Liters of water per day.
Security
Kenya provides a safe environment for tourists. Nevertheless, you should apply the usual recommended safety behavior, everywhere. Keep in mind , you are in a third world country. Thefts happen, if given the opportunity!
Do not go for a walk on streets or the beach after sunset!
Refrain from wearing expensive jewelry and other valuables!
Don’t let anything lay around unattended at the beach and lock up valuables in the hotel safe.
Beach Boys:
At the beach you can find numerous so called ‘Beach Boys’ ((Beach Operator) ,, often perceived as annoyance by guests. The best is to ignore them, patience provided. Some sellers can be very persistent – after all, they want to supplement their livelihood. Ask them politely , to leave you alone. If, contrary to your expectations, a bigger problem develops, inform the receptionist at your quarters or the security personnel of the nearest hotel. Beach sales and tourist harassment are prohibited by law in Kenya.
Trade / Export of sea shells are illegal and will be fined severely by customs. Please, do not book any trips or safaris at the beach, even if the offers appear very intriguing.
Transportation / Traffic:
There are several options , of transportation available in Kenya. You can rent cars, motorbikes, mopeds and bicycles. Although two-wheelers should be absolutely avoided, because of the common driving techniques here. Most guests use a taxi or a “Tuk Tuk” . A taxi can be booked in your hotel at the reception.
Drinking water:
It is NOT recommended to drink tap water. Please, use drinking water from sealed bottles only , because of the existing risk of hepatitis & typhus in certain regions. By following this simple rule, you should experience no problems.
Also be careful to not waste any water from the faucet unnecessarily, since Kenya is a country , experiencing constant water shortages. Therefore, water is considered precious. .
General Rules of Behavior:
„Topless” sunbathing , -. respectively undressing in public are not allowed. This should also be followed just out of respect for the large population of natives with Muslim religion.
Please note, not everything is handled as fast , and accurately as you are used to from Europe. The employees in hotels, Restaurants, Shops, … provide you with extremely friendly service, However, in your usual speed – ‘Pole Pole’ (langsam, slowly) is the motto for a relaxing holiday.
Always treat employees with respect , respect like you want to be treated in your home. Keep in mind, most natives speak multiple languages.
Tips are generally not included in the price, therefore it is appropriate to tip the person directly if receiving good service.
Money & Payment Options:
Visa cards are usually accepted by all major stores, shopping malls , and car rental companies.
ATTENTION: Most of the smaller stores & don’t accept credit cards, -. respectively 5% 5% processing fee will be charged, which will $ be debited in $ or, Kenyan Shilling (KHS). Hence, the better payment method is cash $ in small $ or Euro bills, .. You should lock , up any valuables in your room / hotel safe.
